This guide is intended to assist Sotheby's Institute of Art - New York students with the ProQuest/UMI Thesis submission process.

Embargos on your Thesis or Project

Embargo or Restrict Access to your Project or Thesis

Many questions about thesis submission and publishing options can be answered on Sotheby's ProQuest Electronic Theses and Dissertation site. The following guide should help you make your decisions concerning whether it is appropriate to embargo your thesis or project on ProQuest or the Digital Institutional Repository:

How to Embargo your Project or Thesis

You may apply to restrict access to your thesis or project. You must provide an explanation outlining your reasons for the request to place a restriction on your work

A student can request to restrict access to his/her thesis or project - for a period of up to 2 years or completely. Embargo requests are subject to approval by the Head Librarian (or nominee) and your Project/Thesis Advisor. Such requests will be considered only on the grounds:

  • that the thesis/project contains confidential and/or sensitive material; or
  • that it was a condition imposed by the owner of private records and material used by the author; or
  • that the author was in an employment or other contract relationship with a third party that made the restriction a condition of the contract; or
  • that the thesis/project contains creative, critical, academic or equivalent material with a likelihood of publication, performance or equivalents.

If you would like to embargo or restrict access to your thesis or project, you can do this by completing the Request Embargo your Thesis or Project form, located below, and emailing your request to the Head Librarian. Please ensure to cc' your Thesis/Project adviser in the email.
