Introduction to Bibliographic & Citation Management Software

The following pages are intended to provide an overview of some available citation management software tools. Bibliographic & Citation software provide users with a system in which to store, organize, and retrieve information and research. There are a number of different bibliographic & citation management software currently available including RefWorks, EndNote, Mendeley, and Zotero. While, many of these software require paid subscription accounts, free versions are often available with reduced features. Students are encouraged to explore different software to find the tool that best meets their personal needs and preferences. 

SIA-NY Library provides maintains a paid subscription to RefWorks that is available to all current SIA MA Students. 

Citation Management Software

What is Citation Management Software?

Citation software helps you to:

  • import citations from your favorite databases, library catalogs and websites.
  • build and organize bibliographies.
  • format citations for papers.
  • take notes on articles and save them in your collection of citations.
  • save and organize PDFs, screenshots, graphs, images, and other files for your research.

Sotheby's Institute of Art New York Library provides and supports RefWorks for all full-time students. There are many citation management programs you can choose from including EndNote, Mendeley and Zotero. Each has its own benefits. SIA-NY Library subscribes to RefWorks and we offer support for RefWorks. While we can answer some basic questions about Zotero, Mendeley and Endnote Online, they are freely-available tools and we cannot provide extensive support for technical issues, mishaps, etc.
