Women artists and feminist perspectives: Other libraries

Resources for studying women artists, and for studying male artists from a feminist perspective.

Other libraries

London and the rest of the UK

Library Hub Discover will find you books in other libraries in the UK (plus Dublin).

Library Hub Discover does not tell you which of the libraries it lists you can access. For this info, see:

Key libraries for women's art are:

  • National Art Library: at the V&A
  • British Library: one of the three largest libraries in the world
  • Tate Library: at Tate Britain

There are three specialist libraries in London:

Feminist Library
5,000 titles, divided evenly between non-fiction and fiction.  Good art section, and also useful for background about feminist movements and women's lives. Not included in Library Hub Discover.

Women's Art Library
At Goldsmiths. The largest library collection of women's art material in Europe, with books, magazines, zines, pamphlets, the Women of Colour Index (1985-1995) and artists' documentation boxes containing ephemera, objects and other archival items.  A great resource for studying contemporary and near-contemporary women artists.

Women's Library
At the London School of Economics (LSE). Little art-focussed material, but useful for background to feminist campaigns in the UK from the nineteenth century onwards.

WorldCat will find you books in other libraries worldwide.  Coverage is uneven; e.g. there are some major African cities with no libraries included.

The SIA librarians will help you find books and access libraries anywhere in the world: though please note our knowledge of many countries is limited.

In the USA, the Betty Boyd Dettre Library and Research Center at the National Museum of Women in the Arts may be useful.
