Books

Remember to search Summon as well as browsing the shelves.

Feminist theory is in the THE (theory) section. This includes works written or edited by Simone de Beauvoir, Judith Butler, Betty Friedan, Donna haraway, Luce Irirgay, Sandra Kemp and Judith Squires, Julia Kristeva, Audre Lorde, Doreen Massey, Toril Moi, Uma Narayan and Susan Sontag.

Gender in art has specific sections throughout the library, e.g.

  • ART5.WES.GEND gender in western fine and decorative art
  • DEC2.20C.GEND gender in decorative art and design, 20th century
  • FIA1.GEND: gender in fine art: general studies
  • FIA5.WES.GEND: gender in western fine art: general studies
  • FIA2.20C.GEND: gender in fine art, 20th century
  • FIA2.21C.GEND: gender in fine art, 21st century

Other sections of the library are organised by area or country, not topic, and so books on gender in art will be with books on other topics from the same area.

Individual women artists will be found in sections such as FIA8 (individual fine artists), PHO8 (individual photographers) and DEC8 (individual designers).

Feminist approaches to particular artists or movements will be in the section for that artist or movement.  For instance Anthea Callen's feminist critique of Degas, The Spectacular Body, is with the other Degas books at FIA8.DEGA.CAL
