Summon - advanced search: Using Summon filters

Tips for using Summon when simple search is not enough

On the left-hand side of the Summon results page, there are many options for filtering your results.  This page shows those that students most often find useful.

Above: the Full Text Online option cuts down the results to only those accessible online directly from Summon. (Other articles and books may be available online - but not through Summon.) Scholarly & Peer Review and Journal Article are more good options if you need quick access to a few good quality resources.

To see the full range of content types, use the slider to the right of the list.

As well as including only some content types, it is possible to exclude them.  Hover over any content type to see the option to exclude.

WHEN TO EXCLUDE: this can be useful if you want to find a few high-quality resources quickly.  When conducting more in-depth research, for instance for a dissertation, it may be better not to exclude any categories. For instance, both book reviews and newspaper articles can be written by experts in the field, containing incisive analysis of their subject matter.

To find only material available in physical form in London, select LIBRARY LOCATION and then the London Library option.  Please note that this will not find articles within journals kept in physical form in the library.

It is also possible to search for physical material by going straight to the book catalogue.  The book catalogue is much the better option for finding sales catalogues, and also for picking up material added to the library within the last day or two. However for specialised topics it may not find all the library's books with relevant content.

Click the 1 Year button shown above to see resources published in the last year.  Use the pencil icon to set your own range of dates.  Note: an older book that has been recently republished in a new edition will be listed under its republication date; the same applies to a journal article republished in a new context.

You may have noticed a line of text showing that your results are ordered by relevance.   It's possible to change this so your results are ordered by date.  However it's usually better to use the Publication Date feature described above, because then you keep the relevancy ranking as well as sorting by date.

It is possible to use many filters at once.  However for very complex filtering, it is sometimes easier to use the advanced search screen, described on the next tab of this guide.
