Read aloud: JSTOR and EBSCO

How to activate text-to-audio feature on different platforms, so you can listen to your readings.

JSTOR does not have its own read-aloud feature. You can use any read-aloud app that works with PDFs, such as NaturalReader.

It may work better to download each PDF from JSTOR rather than trying to use your app to read it online.

JSTOR aims to respond quickly to requests for support with reading aloud. If emailing them, we recommend including wording such as accessibility issue in your subject line, so they can see this is an enquiry they should prioritise.  JSTOR contact details are here, and there is much useful info further down the same page. If you wish, the SIA library can also contact JSTOR on your behalf: let us know by emailing library@sia.edu.

On the EBSCO platform, some readings are only available as PDFs. In other cases, you will see the following button, indicating you have a choice of PDF or webpage:

Read aloud works with both access options. Once you have selected your option, you will see a small headphone icon in the top right-hand corner, immediately to the right of the search icon:

Features available:

  • choice of reading speeds
  • downloadable MP3 file for offline listening
  • choice of background colours to highlight the word, and sentence, currently being read (available for webpages but not PDFs)

PDFs can be downloaded from EBSCO. Once downloaded, EBSCO's read aloud feature is no longer available, but you can use other apps to read the PDF.
