A note on terminology: when looking for earlier sources, it can be worth searching with vocabulary that is now considered outdated, or sometimes even offensive.  For instance, Afro-American may find older sources not found by a search for African American

• Oxford Art Online: very varied content, for instance articles on individual African countries and peoples, African American art and the Harlem Renaissance. Good for the historical and art historical background and modern art, but little coverage of contemporary art
