Quick Guide to Online Research

This guide is a primer on conducting scholarly research remotely, highlighting the most fundamental, important, and most powerful resources available to Sotheby's Institute of Art, New York MA students, faculty, and staff.

Auction and Sales Results Databases

Among the most important resources for the art market are auction and sales results databases.  The two largest such resources are Artnet and Art Price.  These databases can be searched by artist, medium, date, auction house, etc. and provide images, catalog information, and hammer prices for works sold at auction.  They require SSOs for access.

Invaluable is a similar resources geared more towards decorative arts and design onjects. The basic version can be searched for free, for searching their archives, please contact the librarians for login credentials.

ArtBnk is a new platform that launched to the public in 2020. It is a growing database (now including 400 artists) that not only contains auction records and images, but also has algorithms that provide comparisons and valuations. Please contact the librarians for login credentials.
