Quick Guide to Online Research

This guide is a primer on conducting scholarly research remotely, highlighting the most fundamental, important, and most powerful resources available to Sotheby's Institute of Art, New York MA students, faculty, and staff.

Image Resources

Finding reliable, vetted images with correct color and metadata can be a challenge in conducting online research.  The following resources are consider among the most reliable.

  • Art Resource Art Resource is a searchable image database of over 400,000 images of fine art from major museums in Europe and the US. It is a photostock company used to obtain official images from its member museums, so color and metadata are the most reliable.
  • ArtStor ARTstor is a comprehensive database of over a million images of art and architecture. The collection spans all mediums, cultures, and time periods.  You will need your SSO to access this database.
